Weekly – Are You Ready to Mow Down the Grass?

Uncontrollable Growth Can Do Damage

When you live on 20 rural acres in the Willamette Valley of Oregon the grass, and brush, and trees, flowers, weeds, grows fast. It’s an explosion of growth, most of which is green and it’s vibrant and beautiful and a huge job to mow.
Getting ready for this growth, like your business growth can be tricky. You want to enjoy the growth, you want to experience all the sights, sounds, smells of success, especially since it may have been a long dormant winter. Enjoying it is bliss and why we do what we do right?

Knowing when to mow down the grass is a question that has many answers depending on who you ask.

One question, of course, is, “Should we mow (temper) the growth at all?” What will happen if we simply let it continue unabated?

Another question might be, If we cut it back, will people (us) still want it?

And of course, “What if it grows out of control and we can’t cut it?” That’s what happens with grass if you let it get so tall and unruly you can’t get the mower through. You end up wrecking your equipment or have to pay double to bring in a bigger machine.

So when does a business person mow the grass?

This is for the owner to answer based on their goals. One thing I rely on is having a team that knows grass. The man who mows for me gives me good counsel, does an excellent job and because I trust him and we keep it under control it’s a win-win for both.

Good luck with your mowing. Don’t you love that fresh cut smell?

Weekly – May Be, May Be Not

This is the Month for Maybes

May – Mother’s day, my mothers birthday, Mayday. Did you know that the term “Mayday, Mayday, Mayday!” is a distress call and as the idea of a man named Frederick Mockford, he came up with the idea for “mayday” because it sounded like the French word for máider, which is defined as “Help me.”Do you ever want to shout – Help me! sometimes? Well, this is the month for it and maybe before we get too overwhelmed we will shout out some maydays to those who could be of help. Who are they?

If you are in this world, of constant stimulation, constant connectedness and constant bombardment of messaging may be the help you need most is to unplug.

For this tip – the mayday is to yourself.

When you ask yourself, “What is one thing I can do today to get clear?” The answer will come. And, if you unplug for a bit, you can allow yourself the space to ask the question and hear the answer.

Secondly – you can mayday to those closest to you. Asking, “Can you help me?” and this second part may be as simple as, “Can you help me see what I’m doing that I could let go of, or delegate?” can be a game changer.

As a leadership coach, my role is to ask those types of questions and see what my client is missing. Do you really have to do all the tasks you are doing? Usually, the answer is no.

One thing many busy professionals forget is to simply ask. This mayday message is this – ask people to help you. Most people adore helping others and when you reach out you let them be a hero. Mayday indeed!

Weekly – Are You in Command of Yourself?

To Give an Authoritative Order

As a pet lover, I give my pets commands. Sit, Stay, Whoa, slow, things I want to happen when I’m with them.

It works too – especially when I’m consistent in my asking/commanding.

Do we do this for ourselves?

The definition of command is to give an authoritative order. An order – for a pet it’s sit, or whoa. What commands are you giving yourself?

Here are some to eradicate:

Don’t be stupid/silly – Stop thinking this! Any command that is negative in tone.

Instead, add these good commands:

Be kind, be open, be loving, be forgiving.

For your business:

Be courteous, be service focused, be gracious.

The whole thing stems from authority, in your life and business you are the authority, now use it well! (That’s a command!)

Weekly – Leadership Lessons from Pet Leaders

Global Pet Expo Insights

When you connect and interact with leaders, a smart idea is to have some questions to ask them. Let’s face it, they are in the “know” and they are living it so why not find out how they do it or what they have learned along the way?

At Global Pet Expo last week, I was fortunate to speak with 14 leaders in the pet space about traits they feel are pivotal for a leader, any leader, and what animal traits leaders would most benefit from.

A gift we are giving you down the road is to post these video interviews here, in the weekly so you can learn too. They are short, with some key lessons and also some memorable stories.

For today I want to share this lesson – and it was driven home for me because I did these leader interviews.

Ask yourself: Who am I learning from? And is it the best person for me right now?

In years past, I left it much to chance to run into, sit next to, or somehow find myself around those who I could both give to and learn from. Now, I have a different intent. I know my expertise will be more beneficial when I have a higher level of engagement with leaders in the trenches especially when I am prepared to engage with them.

This tip alone will benefit you if you take it to heart and apply it.

Ask yourself right now: Who would help my professional growth more?

Then take action. Your future is in your hands!

If you would like help becoming aware and reaching higher levels of results – set up a complimentary success clarifying call with me.

Weekly – Do you have the right intention for a live event?

As you read this I’m in Orlando, Florida for the Global Pet Expo – put on by the American Pet Products Association and it’s a big deal for sure, especially for those manufacturers and suppliers to the professionals that provide products for pet lovers.

I have a very clear intent.

This is imperative for anyone who wants to get the most out of anything.

The word intention means: A thing intended, an aim or plan

My plan is to interview leaders about why loving a pet makes you a better leader. It’s also to see and support our Women in the Pet Industry Network members and talk about why being in the spring issue of Top Women in the Pet Industry Magazine is a savvy and smart idea.

I have goals for how many leaders I want and am interviewing. We’ve made a list of members to connect with and have a meet up planned. There are events to attend and learn from. We’ve created a schedule and matrix for our goals.

And – most people are less than clear about why they attend or exhibit at an event.

The reason I know this is from the plethora of press releases and invitations to visit booths with no apparent benefit except to be told about their product.

So, though it’s too late to come up with a clear intention for this expo, (though setting goals for your day is the start) I would challenge you to think about any and all events you attend. And plan what you want that is realistic and leading to your overall goal, whatever that goal is.

If you do the intention work – coming up with your aim, your plan then there is no doubt you will have a much more successful time.

Would love to hear how you set your intention for events. Please share!

AND – look for some of the interviews I’m doing in upcoming weeklies!

If you would like help becoming aware and reaching higher levels of results – set up a complimentary success clarifying call with me.
