Weekly – Another Month Bites the Dust!

When You Welcome Time Passing Are you tracking your results? From research and my own experience conducting the Monday through Friday Accountability call for the last 12 years – tracking will help you. How do you track and what do you track? How is easy – Use a monthly calendar and mark each day you accomplish the tasks you stated. Keep a gratitude or accomplishment journal – listing the 3 top things you are most happy or grateful about that day. Fill a glass jar with a penny every time you do something on your list. What to track is a little bit more complicated – it means you have to take the time to determine what you want, and the steps you must take to get there. Example: Rather than having a goal of losing weight, or attaining a new customer – the steps to track are: Weight – eat an apple today/ or a day without sweets Customer – call a prospect/ or send a note to a past client Then, when it’s the end of the month – like now – you can look back and know what you did and the results it created. Because you do create your life, whether you track it or not.

Weekly – Are You Ready to Mow Down the Grass?

Uncontrollable Growth Can Do Damage When you live on 20 rural acres in the Willamette Valley of Oregon the grass, and brush, and trees, flowers, weeds, grows fast. It’s an explosion of growth, most of which is green and it’s vibrant and beautiful and a huge job to mow. Getting ready for this growth, like your business growth can be tricky. You want to enjoy the growth, you want to experience all the sights, sounds, smells of success, especially since it may have been a long dormant winter. Enjoying it is bliss and why we do what we do right? Knowing when to mow down the grass is a question that has many answers depending on who you ask. One question, of course, is, “Should we mow (temper) the growth at all?” What will happen if we simply let it continue unabated? Another question might be, If we cut it back, will people (us) still want it? And of course, “What if it grows out of control and we can’t cut it?” That’s what happens with grass if you let it get so tall and unruly you can’t get the mower through. You end up wrecking your equipment or have to pay double to bring in a bigger machine. So when does a business person mow the grass? This is for the owner to answer based on their goals. One thing I rely on is having a team that knows grass. The man who mows for me gives me good counsel, does an excellent job and because I trust him and we keep it under control it’s a win-win for both. Good luck with your mowing. Don’t you love that fresh cut smell?

Weekly – May Be, May Be Not

This is the Month for Maybes May – Mother’s day, my mothers birthday, Mayday. Did you know that the term “Mayday, Mayday, Mayday!” is a distress call and as the idea of a man named Frederick Mockford, he came up with the idea for “mayday” because it sounded like the French word for máider, which is defined as “Help me.”Do you ever want to shout – Help me! sometimes? Well, this is the month for it and maybe before we get too overwhelmed we will shout out some maydays to those who could be of help. Who are they? If you are in this world, of constant stimulation, constant connectedness and constant bombardment of messaging may be the help you need most is to unplug. For this tip – the mayday is to yourself. When you ask yourself, “What is one thing I can do today to get clear?” The answer will come. And, if you unplug for a bit, you can allow yourself the space to ask the question and hear the answer. Secondly – you can mayday to those closest to you. Asking, “Can you help me?” and this second part may be as simple as, “Can you help me see what I’m doing that I could let go of, or delegate?” can be a game changer. As a leadership coach, my role is to ask those types of questions and see what my client is missing. Do you really have to do all the tasks you are doing? Usually, the answer is no. One thing many busy professionals forget is to simply ask. This mayday message is this – ask people to help you. Most people adore helping others and when you reach out you let them be a hero. Mayday indeed!
