Weekly – Do you have the right intention for a live event?

As you read this I’m in Orlando, Florida for the Global Pet Expo – put on by the American Pet Products Association and it’s a big deal for sure, especially for those manufacturers and suppliers to the professionals that provide products for pet lovers. I have a very clear intent. This is imperative for anyone who wants to get the most out of anything. The word intention means: A thing intended, an aim or plan My plan is to interview leaders about why loving a pet makes you a better leader. It’s also to see and support our Women in the Pet Industry Network members and talk about why being in the spring issue of Top Women in the Pet Industry Magazine is a savvy and smart idea. I have goals for how many leaders I want and am interviewing. We’ve made a list of members to connect with and have a meet up planned. There are events to attend and learn from. We’ve created a schedule and matrix for our goals. And – most people are less than clear about why they attend or exhibit at an event. The reason I know this is from the plethora of press releases and invitations to visit booths with no apparent benefit except to be told about their product. So, though it’s too late to come up with a clear intention for this expo, (though setting goals for your day is the start) I would challenge you to think about any and all events you attend. And plan what you want that is realistic and leading to your overall goal, whatever that goal is. If you do the intention work – coming up with your aim, your plan then there is no doubt you will have a much more successful time. Would love to hear how you set your intention for events. Weekly – Everyone Says They Are…

Of Course I Listen!

“You never listen!” is a phrase you may have had someone say to you, or more likely, you’ve said to someone.

We want people to listen to us. We want to be heard, seen, understood. And yet, and yet – it doesn’t happen all that often. And maybe, usually, it’s because we want what we want – and rarely focus on what the other person wants.

And that is the secret of success.

To listen to people.

And here is the rub – we mostly would love to be listened to. If we are honest, if we are clear and true. We would love to be listened to, to be admired, to matter what else is happening – please listen to me!

So how to use this?

Stop selling – begin listening – and gently asking – and then listening to the answers and letting the other person know you are listening.

This will help you in two ways:

  1. People will respond and when they do, they will buy more.
  2. You will learn something – and if you are really listening, you may learn a lot! Which you can use to your advantage and serve your customers even more.

And for our incessant goal of being listened to?

When someone does – praise them lavishly. “Thank you for being a great listener!” – Or – “You are a wonderful listener! Thank you!”  

And then, they will keep listening and all things will be wonderful!

Listen up! Be a good listener and see what happens to your bottom line!

Weekly – Are you looking or seeing?

What is the point of having a good view?

I live on a hill. It looks out over a small valley that holds many trees, brush, blackberry bushes that creep and a winding gravel road that leads to the barn and onto the main road that takes me into town.

I also have large picture windows that are really pieces of art since the view through them changes into the most gorgeous landscapes each season.  I would like to say I spend time really looking out the windows – and yet – Though I glance out of them often, do I really see what is there? Does this happen in your life or business too?

So, how do we shift from looking and start seeing? And what do we want to see?

Most of this is about, of course, what we are focused on. When someone comes into our business are we looking at them only rather than seeing them?

What does it take to see?

  1. Deepness – looking deeper than the surface. To note the subtle things that at first glance you might miss. And that will help you notice and then comment or compliment on.
  2. Finding the good, the positive, the little things that would make your client feel special. The light in their eyes, the smile they display and the questions they ask.
  3. Noting what is off. From a frown, or signs of tiredness or even someone down in the shoulders. These are signs that a sweet word from you may make all the difference to their day.

One of the gifts of writing this weekly is how it helps me (as I seek to help you) to do what I am   – so that I will look as usual and also I will seek to really see.

Weekly – One of the Most Demanding Traits of a Leader

Are You Consistent As a Leader?

One of my team and I had a little misunderstanding. When we stopped to talk about it she said to me, “You are inconsistent sometimes.”

She is right. I am inconsistent sometimes.

I could probably say that I am consistently inconsistent but I think that would probably be some sort of grammatical inconsistency! Ha!

How can we become more consistent?

In my search about the traits most beneficial to a leader – consistency is one that is sought muchly and attained rarely. – And I think the reason is that we are such interesting beings, us humans.

In attempting to understand and decide how to become more consistent in my leadership, I am studying the leaders I most admire and one quote I uncovered and like is from Lincoln Chafee who said, “Trust is built with consistency.”

So that’s my call to action – to work on becoming more and more consistent! And I trust by having this goal I can attain it. What do you think?
