The Weekly – What Are You Going As?

How is Wearing a Mask Working for You?

Today is Halloween and if you’ve been capitalizing on this season you are dressed up today. If so, good for you – and does your team know your vision?

That may seem an odd question on a costume day but it really isn’t. A day like Halloween allows us to step back and ask some basic questions…

To keep it super simple – what is the purpose of your dressing up? To play, engage, create team spirit? Did you share that? Did you use this opportunity to spread your message out?

If so, bravo! From my work with leaders, it usually seems they move forward and people follow them but without a really clear idea of the end goal. And it’s only when the question is asked, “Does your team know the end goal?” That they begin to question if they have even shared it.

Because we are so into our own heads, our own ideas and visions, many times as we shift, and morph and tweak our direction without sharing those tweaks, morphs and new directions with those on our teams.

I think it’s usually because our minds work so fast, things change quickly and new opportunities arise. And still, sharing the vision with your team, with its tweaks and shifts is vital, just like sharing the why behind a costume or a sale, or an initiative.

Let this Halloween day be the day you decide to share not only some treats – but your vision as well!

Vision work and planning time are imperative to attaining your goals and your team goals. We’ll be spending time on these during the Ultimate Leadership Adventure starting in January.  Click here for more information

The Weekly – The Challenge with Communication…

Do you think You Communicate Well?

This quote is something I’ve been saying a long time, “The Challenge with Communication is the Illusion that it’s been achieved.”

I lifted and altered it after reading this quote from George Bernard Shaw, “The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place.”

Regardless which one resonates with you notice the word “Illusion.”

The definition of an illusion is: a thing that is or is likely to be wrongly perceived or interpreted by the senses

And there it is: Wrongly Perceived – and that’s it with communication. We think we do a good job (I guess I can only speak for myself and my clients) and yet, many times our words don’t land as intended.

Things we asked for are lost in translation.

Someone actually says to us, “You never told me…”

Praise or more likely correction is taken out of context and wrong.

So – if it’s An Illusion that communication is really achieved – how do we do this better?

Here are a few things to help you:

  1. Ask those you are speaking with to repeat your request or give feedback to what you said.
  2. Give the listener a chance to ask questions to get an agreement on what needs to be done.
  3. Preface your praise or correction with why you’re saying what you are – two phrases you might like:
    1. “You may not know this…”OR “You might love hearing… “(Give Praise)
    2. For correction, start with this, “In hopes of helping you…” OR “Going forward…

One thing that helps a lot is to role play and practice with others in a safe environment. We’ll be doing this kind of work during the 4 retreats as part of the Ultimate Leadership Adventure. Plus many other communication tools that provide wonderful results. Click here to find out more about that.

The Weekly – When is your scheduled planning time?

Sometimes does it feel like you’re overscheduled?

Benjamin Franklin is reported to have said something you no doubt have heard before –

“Failing to plan is planning to fail,”

Do you believe it, do you live it? When do you schedule your planning? –

With our calendars so overscheduled anyway, how do we fit planning in?

I have some ideas…

1. Take a full day to Retreat – Review – Renew and Recommit. A little ReRe for you rather than Ra Ra! Ha! If you’re thinking to yourself right now – “Yeah right! When can I fit that in?” Then you need it even more!  In the upcoming – Ultimate Leadership Adventure starting in January there are 4 scheduled retreats – one each quarter to do the ReRe – and it will be mind-blowing and exactly what you can use to recharge your batteries.

2. Take 15 minutes for an end of the day review. And ask 1-3 questions to clarify what you’re doing and how you’re doing it. These questions can be along the lines of:

  • What went really right today?
  • What skill or expertise can I strengthen?
  • Am I happy with the way I spent my time

3. Build in accountability with a partner or teammate. One of the women on my team is a wiz at organization and structure. She creates a running agenda and each Monday we do a review of the past week and plan the one we’re beginning.

You see more value in this as you do it consistently

Knowing someone is going to ask if it’s done will help you do it

Having guidelines is key to success – (we’ll be defining and learning   like this in the Ultimate Leadership Adventure coming in January)

The Weekly – H.O.T. Communication

3 points to make your points stronger

A stumbled across a quote about communication that is clever and may be a way for you to improve your communication, with, like, everyone.

It’s from Dan Oswald who has been the Chief Executive Officer of Business & Legal Resources, Inc. since 2011 and is kind of a big deal who writes The Oswald Letter, Insights on Business and Leadership.

I don’t know anything about Mr. Oswald, but I really dug his quote –

Here it is:

“Communication must be HOT – Honest and Open and Two-Way.”

Think about that for a bit –

Honest – One of the biggest challenges most of us face is this honesty issue. Are we honest?

I would imagine that most of us would think, or say that we are honest – and then, are we?

I know I’ve lied to myself, and if really honest: to others. And right now it matters not the reasons. Being honest means sometimes admitting we’ve not been completely honest, especially with ourselves.

Now the caveat – I’m NOT an advocate of BRUTAL Honesty, mostly that’s simply mean. However, when we are honest, with ourselves and others, things go better.

Open is next and in the world we live in there is a LOT of open. For this post, I’ll leave it to you to determine how open you want to be. Vulnerability can be lovely, TMI (Too Much Information) can be off-putting.

Lastly and maybe most important for communication is Two-Way – back and Forth, Give and Take – There are many ways to say this but the gist of it is this – Be IN conversation – rather than DOING conversation. When you shift that intent – the Two-Way continues.

Let me know what you think – though we’re not conversing, I would love these posts to be more Two-Way!

Adore you!
Shawna
