The Weekly – The Old Crippled Goat

What’s in a word?

Chester is my old goat and he is a cripple. His leg somehow began to bend at an odd angle and has gotten progressively worse.

This has slowed him down but not put him out. He has a very nice life. He lives with his best friend, Herbert the Hogster in a covered and straw filled Goat-tel.

Because we all live together on 20 very rural acres with no neighbors I let them both roam free.

One of my businesses is an Airbnb on the lower level of my log home and when I started to tell people they could feed and interact with the pig and crippled goat, one of my team said, “Maybe you shouldn’t call him crippled. I mean, people are sensitive these days.”

That got me thinking…

I looked up the word, crippled –

Over and over there was a “warning” that this word used in conjunction with people could be considered offensive.

Seems it’s still fine with animals – so I guess I’m safe – and as a verb – “You can cripple your business by focusing on profits over service” is usable too.

The lesson for business is how powerful words are. How quickly we pick up on them (are we looking for things to be offended about?) and how a little research can give you a new perspective.

Chester has a very bent and unusable leg which he has learned to compensate for. He never complains, is content in his life and I am blessed to have him share it with me. It appears he takes no offense to what we call him. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if people were like that too?

So I challenge you, me and the world, to be less offended. Though words are very important, what is more important is attitude. Chester is an example that even with a bum leg, life is still amazing.

Blessings,
Shawna Schuh, CSP

The Weekly – Find Out if You are Exercising Your Imagination

Imagination May Be the Key to Your Profitability

W. Somerset Maugham once said, “Imagination grows by exercise, and contrary to common belief, is more powerful in the mature than in the young.”

In speaking with my coaching clients and those in business, it’s amazing to me that I hear people say, “I”m not creative.” or this is even more prevalent, “I can’t imagine…”

So, since you know, if you’ve read my posts for any length of time what a word watcher I am…

What you say out loud, you make true for yourself!.

Let me repeat that: WHAT YOU SAY YOU MAKE TRUE.

Do you believe that?

Imagination and creativity – something we are ALL born with. It came with your operating system, it’s in your DNA, it is there and ready to be used in any given moment.

So listen up!

You ARE creative.
You have an ACTIVE imagination.

So say that to yourself right now:

I AM creative!
I AM imaginative!

Now that we have that established. How will you use these amazing gifts you have in abundance? And what are you doing to make them better?

I’m here to serve you!
Blessings, Shawna

The Weekly – Ask a Better Question, here’s how

Engaging with your clients is about asking

Easter is this Sunday and this is another opportunity to know your customers better, engage with them more and learn something that can help you.

It begins with a question and I’m going to give you a couple to use. I would love to hear about your results.

When you ask an open-ended question the things you learn about your customers is priceless.

So here are a couple of questions that will do several things.

  1. They will engage at a deeper level
  2. You can find out who your customer is and what they believe
  3. You may find a tradition or experience you want to do

Here you go:

How do you celebrate Easter?

What do you love most about the Easter holiday?

What is your favorite Easter memory?

Pick the one that resonates most with you, or use them all and uncover which one most people respond to best.

Depending on how they answer, you will collect valuable information about who your customers are and what they value.

They may share something that you want to try, and they will no doubt give you an opening to suggest something you provide that will fit into their thinking.

Let me know how it goes!

Happy Easter and I wish you also wonderful new beginnings.

Blessings,
Shawna

The Weekly – People Make Up Stories…

Women in the Pet Industry Network Skips a Conference Year!

Here’s to another successful 5 years of GROWTH!

“Did You hear that Women in the Pet Industry Network is canceling their conference this year?”

“No, I didn’t! What’s going on, do you know?

“No I don’t but it can’t be good. I mean why would they cancel it if something wasn’t wrong?”

The above scenario is one that happens all the time, and it’s not effective, nor does it help the two parties but we simply can’t help ourselves from jumping to the worse conclusions when we don’t know what is going on.

So here’s the inside scoop on why Women in the Pet Industry Network is letting 2018 go by without a conference.

Being totally committed to helping leaders excel inside the pet space is what WIPIN is all about. One way we do that is through meeting live. At industry events and at the conference, this year, however, a big life event happened to one of our leaders (As a first pregnancy, she had premature twins – a boy and a girl – and yes they are doing fine) but that has put a bit of a wrench in the works for everyone since she is the master of event planning.

And, since we’ve celebrated 5 amazing years with WIPIN, it’s time to renew, recommit and rework things so we can serve our members and the industry ever better!

I personally am so excited I don’t know how to convey it adequately.

Though I am sorry to disappoint our avid fans, those who have submitted to speak and the sponsors who make it all happen, I am really looking forward to taking all that time and energy and putting it towards making WIPIN even better, bolder and more valuable.

So that’s the story.

Alicia had premature twins which not only put us behind, it was adding unneeded stress on all the other team members and me.

After considerable deliberations and speaking to many of the amazing leaders in this network, taking a year off from the conference is the right choice.

Spending the time and energy on making WIPIN better is the result we seek.

We are committed to:

Making Membership ever better and adding more leaders to our mix.

Cross promotion through our Top Women in the Pet Industry Magazine – look for a notice soon about the spring issue.

Focusing on bringing remarkable women recognition through the Pet Industry Woman of the Year awards which is also opening soon.

If you have any ideas how to focus our energy better, or what we can do to make WIPIN ever better, let me know.

AND – I’ll see you at Global if you’re going!
