How Self Aware Are You?
Been thinking a lot about leaders lately. I’m working with them daily, reading about them all the time and having to make leadership decisions continually myself and everything is leading me to ask myself, and now you: How self-aware am I and are you?
The reason this is an important question to kick off this year is that being self-aware can give you and me a competitive advantage.
First, because awareness is key to any kind of improvement- an expression I use often with my coaching clients is: Awareness is first.
If you are not even aware of a habit or phrase or thought process you have, you have no idea how it may be hurting you and you have no idea you can alter and improve your situation. Basically, you are unaware. This is one of the main reasons professionals seek coaching.
Becoming AWARE – about your own thinking, how you are communicating and behaving will pave the way to improvement. It will make YOU the most important person in 2019 to you.
How do you become more aware which lends itself to self-awareness?
Ask yourself some good questions!
Here’s the one to start with this week:
Who do I want to be in this situation?
Anything you do – you can ask yourself this question before doing it.
Engaging with your own habits or poor choices:
ASK: Who do I want to be in this situation? Usually it’s not who you are being so then you can shift!
Someone treating you poorly in a restaurant or the road:
ASK: Who do I want to be in this situation? Forgiving and kind or a jack ass?
Calling a prospect:
ASK: Who do I want to be in this situation? Pushy and relentless or calling with a heart to understand and serve?
You get the idea.
When you ask yourself this question: Who do I want to be in this situation? You go deeper than others, you get to shift prior to mistakes and mostly you come to realize you create who you are with every decision you make.
It’s a brand new year so you can create an ever better version of you! You can do it and awareness is key, so start there!
